Singaporean student, Tammy Nyp is at the center of a storm of publicity on the internet and especially in the blogosphere that will leave a lasting negative impact on her life.
Her crime is recording herself having sex with her boyfriend on her mobile phone and then having that phone stolen by a jealous rival. The rival was then nice enough to upload the amateur film to the internet.
While this might seem banal enough to most weterners, the problem is that Tammy lives in Singapore - a quite traditional and strict society. It is a place where chewing gum is illegal and, as one unfortunate American found out a few years ago, vandalism can get you a session of 30 lashes with a cane from the state’s corporal punishment experts.
Hopefully, nothing so drastic awaits Tammy, but the effect this will have on her life in a small, conservative society shouldn’t be forgotten.
It also brings home the ugly side of technology.
The growth of the internet and digital communication technologies coupled with their decreasing cost and increasing accessiblity has had many positives, but as the case of Tammy Nyp has demonstrated, there is also a downside to the equation.
Citizen reportage is at an all-time high which has helped keep people informed and in extreme cases, governments accountable, has been an overwhelming positive of the digital revolution and is directly attributable to technology such as that used by Tammy Nyp.
But at the same time, privacy infringements are also at an all-time high. For exapmle, in Japan, makers of mobile phone cameras were forced to add a sound to the cameras so that people would hear when a photo was being taken. This was in direct response to the amount of voyeurs who were being caught taking anonymous photos up women’s dresses and down their tops and posting them on the internet.
Then of course, there are the cases of Paris Hilton, Tammy Nyp and Kid Rock - all incidences of amateur porn which has found its way (or almost found its way) to the internet against the wishes of those participating. Sure, the stupidity of creating such video might be self evident, but ruining lives for stupidity (especially in the case of teenagers) seems somewhat disproportionate to the crime.
In the end, this is probably a necessary negative to the advantages of having widely available digital communications, but those disadvantages are forgotten at our own peril.
When it becomes acceptable or popular practice to post video of your rivals engaging in embarassing or non-socially acceptable acts on the internet we begin to move towards a society of neighbours reporting neighbours and self policing more reminiscent of an Orwellian nightmare than of a free and civilised society.

God, you must be out of your mind. It actually is a nightmare that in a civilized country in the 21st century you still get punished for being human. (showing yourself naked and having sex that is)
And then you talk about the abuse of citizen reportage and the terrible effects of it -

Perhaps tammy shouldnt have done such a horrible sin.. it is nth wrong to have a sex wid ur loved one but still having a premarital sex is somehow not right.. perhaps she will learn her mistake from it.. hopefully, God bless her n her bf.
